Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
