A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. “We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
